Doomdark, the Sauron-equivalent of the world, is planning to use the opportunity to crush the Free (humans) and the Fey (elves). The background of the game is that the land of Midnight has been in a deep winter for generations and now the Winter Solstice is approaching.

I just checked the applet version and at least with Safari it mangled up the graphics. The game runs either as a web applet or as a standalone Java program. It's rather accurate recreation of the original, though there are some bugs left (for example, lords killed in battle may end up howering in place like zombies). Some years ago I stumbled on a reimplementation of the game. There's no ingame map at all but the game box included a not-too-detailed map that gave a general idea of the landscape.

What makes it remarkable is that it's played in the first person view: the player controls a number of lords who each see whatever they happen to see from where they stand in. Lords of Midnight is a turn-based fantasy strategy game that was originally released in 1984.
